  • Description

In the far off Borneo, one of the last remaining British colonies in the East, the local people are preparing a huge welcome to Prince Philip when he visits their area during the current world tour.

Though the Prince has been around the world already twice, this will be the first time he visits Borneo, the largest island in the world and one that is yet untouched in most parts by the modern way of living.

The people of Borneo, prominent among them the Dyaks and Ibans still lead a way of life near to nature than others in this part of the world till very recently the swampy and thick jungle interiors of Borneo were unsafe because of head hunters. But the peoples of Borneo are very hospitable once they could trust the visitor.

Prince Philip will be in Borneo territory during the end of February after visiting India, Burma and the British Colony of Singapore. While in Borneo he would visit Sarawak, the famed kingdom of the Brooks rajahs, the oil-rich British protected sultanate of Brunei, and the colony of North Borneo.

During his entire tour Prince Philip will have one of most varied of welcomes - the traditional western welcomes with guards of honour, police bands, and cocktail parties and the typical Borneo welcomes with local musicians and dancers taking full part.

Arrangements are now being made for thousands of Uyak warriors to journey down the vast network of rivers that blanket Borneo to assemble at Sebu, one of the big towns at the mouth of the great river Rajang. These former head hunters who are staunob royalists will stage a maze display of war dances in honour of Prince Philip's arrival.

Prince Philip who is well up with the jet age will during his visit to Borneo, be in touch with another part of the world that moves, if at all, very, very slowly.
