  • Description

The Republic of the Ivory Coast celebrated the 16th anniversary of independence on Tuesday (7 December).

SYNOPSIS: President Felix Houphouet-Boigny reviewed a mass march-past by representatives of the Ivory Coast's armed forces, women's organisations and youth groups. 14,000 guests from all over the country were specially invited to watch the parade passing through the streets of Abidjan.

Earlier in the day the President announced that the Ivory Coast had made a favourable balance of payments in the last financial year, due meanly to increased exports of agricultural products. Despite liberal economic policies and the expansion of industry, farming still plays a crucial role in the country's economy and foreign trade.

On the eve of the anniversary there were folk dancers performing and a fireworks display at the presidential palace. But there was one rather unexpected addition to the parade...

The Republic, formerly a province of French West Africa, remains closely bound to France. Paris supplies equipment and training for the country's army in return for bases in case of need. The Ivory Coast has 3,650 men in the army and 2,000 in gendarmerie.
