  • Description

Nationalist China's well-trained commando force has proved again that it can strike at the Chinese Communists at will along the mainland coastline. In 3 dashing raids one recent night, commandoes from Taiwan sank 2 military supply ships and one gunboat and damaged a second gunboat in 3 Communist ports on the Taiwan Straits. As usual, they struck on a rain-swept night when visibility was low and patrols on shore were probably taking refuge from the storm. The surprise attacks were the first major clash between the Republic of China and Communist China in 3 1/2 years. Details of the raid were spares, but free China has a variety of ships easily capable of transporting the sea-borne attackers the 100 miles across the Straits.

President Chiang Kai-shek and the Chinese first lady made an inspection tour of this naval facility recently.

The effectiveness of swift, probing attacks of the Nationalists is generally un-reported by either side. But the Communists' Liberation Army Daily newspaper obliquely admitted the danger frogmen like these pose for the mainland by urging defense forces to be more watchful.

The current, official Nationalist policy for re-gaining the mainland is based on 70 percent political activity -- that is, cultivating and supporting anti-Communist groups on the mainland.....and 30 percent military activity that involves commandoes based in Taiwan and guerrillas behind the bamboo curtain.

How effective are they? Well, Peking itself has blamed the Kuomingtang, or Nationalist, for its chaotic internal situation.

The Nationalists -- who have the capability of striking by air as well as by sea -- say they have ignited revolutionary sparks behind the bamboo curtain and they will not let the flames die out.
