  • Description

January 25 - the day of the return to Delhi of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip from their tiger shoot in the Rajasthan jungle, and the busiest day of their Indian tour so far. One of the events in their crowded programme was a display by Boy Scouts and sari-clad Girl Guides.

Accompanied by the Maharajah of Sikkim, they watched a maidens's dance from Manipur performed by a company of Guides in richly colourful hooped skirts with belled anklets and white veils.

Then - accompanied by drums, fifes and cymbals - Boy Scouts from the Adavasi tribe danced what seemed like a sailor's hornpipe - on stilts. The Queen was finally presented with gifts for her children.

The tiger that Prince Philip shot in Rajasthan measured 9 feet, 8 inches - 11 inches longer that the 8 feet, 9 inches, announced earlier. It was revealed that they will go on a further tiger expedition in Nepal next month - this time shooting from the backs of elephants.
