  • Description

Mr Dag Hammarskjoeld, Secretary General of the United Nations, who has been paying a two day visit to Jordan, was filmed by VISNEWS Jan 4 when he visited the refugee camp at Akabat Jaber, near Jericho, where 45,000 Palestinian arabs have been living in enforced idleness for ten soul destroying years. After drinking the ritual cup of coffee, without which no arab meeting can begin, Mr Hammarskjoeld was required to stand for a minutes silence in memory of the 'victims of Palestine'. In reply to an impassioned demand for repatriation by Mohammed Said, leader of the Moslem Brotherhood within the camp, Mr Hammarskjoeld dilated on the limitations of his own functions as a servant of all members of the United Nations. He asked the arabs to trust him, "but do not be led to believe that we can work miracles". His speech was received by the leaders with evident disappointment. No reference had been made to the proposed arab 'peace march' back into Israel.

When Mr Hammarskjoeld saw the temper of the huge crowd that had gathered outside the camp headquarters, he decided to cut his visit short and drive back to Amman. As he entered his car a crowd of 2,000 advanced lifting their arms and shouting "We want to return to our own country".
