  • Description

More than 30 people were injured in Genoa, June 30, during a general strike called in protest against the congress of the neo-Fascist Italian Social Movement due to begin in the city July 3.

There had been a peaceful demonstration, including the laying of wreaths at the memorial to the Genoa resistance leaders killed by the Fascists during the last stages of the war. But later the procession, about 10,000 strong, clashed with police barring the way in the city centre.

Tear gas bombs were used and shots fired in the air, while the demonstrators overturned two light police trucks, setting them on fire. Stones were thrown at the police form rooftops. After a two-hour struggle the streets were cleared. Two men were detained in hospital in a serious condition.

This follows a street battle in Genoa, J 25, when nine policemen were taken to hospital after clashes with 1,000 demonstrators who showed their unmistakable disapproval of the planned neo-Fascist meeting.

The anti-Fascist in Genoa are particularly incensed because the honorary chairman of the neo-Fascist congress is to be Signor Carlo Basile, who was prefect of Genoa before Mussolini's fall, and instrumental in deporting many workers to Germany. Basile was sentenced to death after the war, but was released under and amnesty.
