  • Description

IN HUE, FOUR-FIFTHS OF WHICH WERE DESTROYED DURING THE VIET CONG TET OFFENSIVE EARLY THIS YEAR, RECONSTRUCTION IS PROCEEDING STEADILY. THE BOMBED-OUT DISTRICTS ARE BEING REBUILT. RE-HOUSING IS GOING AHEAD FAST. THREE-QUARTERS OF THE HOMELESS ARE BACK IN THEIR OWN HOUSES, WHILE OTHERS HAVE FOUND ACCOMMODATION IN MAKE-SHIFT HUTS OR IN FISHING JUNKS WITH THEIR RELATIVES.

IN AN ATMOSPHERE OF RETURNING CONFIDENCE, TRADE IS BEING REVIVED AS THE MARKET TAKES SHAPE ONCE AGAIN.

ABOUT 80 PER CENT OF HUE WAS DAMAGED IN THE 25 DAYS OF THE TET OFFENSIVE, WHICH COST NEARLY FOUR-AND-A-HALF THOUSAND NORTH VIETNAMESE AND VIET CONG LIVES, AND NEARLY 500 LIVES ON THE OTHER SIDE.

THE CITADEL WAS CONQUERED FOR THE SECOND TIME IN ITS 1950-YEAR HISTORY. IN 1946, IT WAS OCCUPIED BY THE COMMUNIST VIETMINH AND SOME 100 BUILDINGS IN THE PALACE GROUNDS WERE DESTROYED.
