  • Description

FOUR INCHES OF RAIN IN A FEW HOURS HAS BROUGHT FLOODING TO PARTS OF CENTRAL AUSTRALIA WHERE THE ANNUAL RAINFALL IS OFTEN ONLY A FEW INCHES.

AT ALICE SPRINGS THE TODD RIVER IS IN FLOOD AND FLOWING AT ITS HIGHEST LEVEL FOR TEN YEARS. NORMALLY THE TODD IS NOTHING MORE THAN A DRY BED OF SAND.

BUT ALTHOUGH THE PEOPLE OF THE AREA HAVE WELCOMED THE RAIN, IT HAS BROUGHT SOME HARDSHIP. ALL LINKS WITH ALICE SPRINGS ARE UNDERWATER, AND THE ONLY SUPPLIES REACHING THE TOWN ARE THOSE AIRLIFTED IN. THE RAILWAY LINE BETWEEN ALICE SPRINGS AND SOUTH AUSTRALIA HAS BEEN CUT AND WILL TAKE WEEKS TO REPAIR.

AND EVEN MORE IMPORTANT, THE RAIN HAS NOT BROUGHT AN END TO THE PROBLEMS CREATED BY THE PROTRACTED DROUGHT WHICH HAS AFFECTED CENTRAL AUSTRALIA AND AREAS OF QUEENSLAND AND NEW SOUTH WALES FOR MORE THAN A YEAR.

MORE RAIN IS NEEDED TO PROMOTE REGROWTH OF PARCHED PASTURE LANDS, VITAL WHEN THE RESTOCKING OF HERDS AND SHEEP FLOCKS GETS UNDERWAY. IT WILL TAKE AT LEAST A YEAR FOR GRAZIERS TO RESTORE THEIR STOCK NUMBERS.
