    STUDENTS DEMONSTRATORS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF ROME CLASHED WITH POLICE DURING A MARCH THROUGH THE CITY TODAY (FRIDAY) IN SUPPORT OF A NATION-WIDE STUDENT DEMAND FOR UNIVERSITY REFORM.

    DURING THEIR MARCH, THEY STAGED A SIT-DOWN IN THE CITY CENTRE AND HELP UP TRAFFIC UNTIL MOVED BY POLICE.

    TODAY'S DEMONSTRATION WAS THE SECOND ON SUCCESSIVE DAYS IN ROME. STUDENTS HAVE BEEN DEMONSTRATING THROUGHOUT ITALY FOR REFORMS OF THE OUTMODED ITALIAN UNIVERSITY SYSTEM, BETTER FACILITIES FOR STUDENTS AND MORE CONTACT BETWEEN STUDENTS AND THEIR PROFESSORS.

    TODAY'S MARCH BEGAN IN THE PIZZA DI SPAGNA, WHERE TRAFFIC WAS BLOCKED FOR NEARLY AN HOUR, AFTER THAT, CHANTING AND SHOUTING STUDENTS MARCHED THROUGH THE CITY TO THE UNIVERSITY, WHERE THEY HOISTED A BANNER SAYING "LIBERTY AT THE UNIVERSITY."
    THE MARCH THROUGH ROME LED TO CLASHES BETWEEN STUDENTS AND ANGRY MOTORISTS SNARLED UP IN TRAFFIC JAMS. LATER SOME OF THE STUDENTS BARRICADED THEMSELVES INSIDE A UNIVERSITY BUILDING AND DEFIED POLICE TO GET THEM OUT. A NUMBER OF POLICEMEN WERE HURT BY FLYING STONES.
