  • Description

INDONESIA AND THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA EACH FLEW THE OTHER'S DIPLOMATS HOME YESTERDAY IN A SECRET MANOEUVRE WHICH BROUGHT TO A HEAD THE TENSION OF RECENT MONTHS, AND EFFECTIVELY SUSPENDED RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES. CHINA FLEW THE INDONESIAN DELEGATION INTO DJAKARTA, AND HER OWN MEN RETURNED ON THE SAME PLANE.

THE DAY IN DJAKARTA HAD BEGUN WITH THE CHINESE CEREMONIOUSLY HAULING DOWN THE FLAG OVER THEIR EMBASSY BEFORE HANDING IT OVER TO THE CARE OF THE RUMANIAN EMBASSY. THEN THEY LEFT WITH THEIR BELONGINGS FOR THE AIRPORT.

TWO OF THE DIPLOMATS ARRIVED FOR THEIR AIRCRAFT FROM A MILITARY HOSPITAL, WHERE THEY WERE BEING TREATED FOR INJURIES RECEIVED A MONTH AGO IN A STUDENT RAID ON THEIR EMBASSY. ONE HAD HIS ARM IN PLASTER: OTHER CHINESE SHOWED SCARS ON THEIR HEADS. THEY ALL CARRIED RED BOOKS CONTAINING THE THOUGHTS OF CHAIRMAN MAO TSE-TUNG AND WAVED THEM IN GREETING AT OTHER CHINESE OFFICIALS WHO LEFT THE PLANE TO MEET THEM.

ONE OF THE FIGHT INDONESIAN DIPLOMATS BACK FROM PEKING SAID: "WE ARE HALF DEAD, BUT HAPPY TO BE HOME. WE HAD A SMOOTH SEND-OFF AND THERE WAS NOT TROUBLE."
