    THE FIRST 15 COMMUNIST PRISONERS FREED BY GREECE'S NEW GOVERNMENT HAVE REACHED ATHENS. ALL HAD SERVED MORE THAN TEN YEARS IN JAIL AND WERE RELEASED ON "PAROLE". THERE ARE 964 "POLITICAL DETAINEE" STILL IN PRISON.

    FILM SHOWS SHIP BRINGING PRISONERS FROM PRISON ISLAND BERTHING IN PIREAUS, THE PORT OF ATHENS; PEOPLE WAITING ITS ARRIVAL AND REUNION SCENES.

    THE FREED MEN WERE ALL SERVING LIFE SENTENCES. THEY HAD BEEN CONVICTED DURING THE CIVIL WAR OF 1947-49 FOR "SUBVERSIVE ACTIVITIES". LAST YEAR A "LENIENCY" LAW WAS ENACTED WHICH PERMITTED THE MINISTER OF JUSTICE TO RELEASE PRISONERS "FOR GOOD CONDUCT OR BECAUSE OF SICKNESS OR OLD AGE."
    THOSE RELEASED WILL BE ON A FIVE-YEAR PROBATION AT THE END OF WHICH THEY WILL BE CONSIDERED TO HAVE SERVED THEIR SENTENCE. FURTHER DETAINEE ARE EXPECTED TO BE FREED IN THE COMING WEEKS.
