    The Communist-sponsored Tenth World Youth Festival began in East Berlin on Saturday (28 July) with a parade through decorated streets and an opening ceremony at a sport stadium re-named for the occasion.

    For nine-days, East Berlin will be the centre of meetings and rallies for thirty-thousand young delegates from Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America, sad more than 100,000 from German itself. Officials claim the city's population will rise by Half-a-million for the festival.

    The Festival's main slogan is "Anti-Imperialist Solidarity, Peace and Friendship."
    Twenty-tons of sausage have arrived in East Berlin to feed the young visitors. They're being accommodated n hotels, hostels and private houses.

    The Festival will include international discussions on "the struggle against the monopolies and against exploitation, militarism, fascism and oppression."
    Heavy security precautions have been put into force. Police patrols have been doubled and columns of military vehicles have entered East Berlin. East German authorities have feared that the Festival could be marred by an attack similar to that staged by Arab guerrillas at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.

    SYNOPSIS: A rousing brass band headed a colourful, multi-national parade through the streets of East Berlin on Saturday. The occasion -- the start of the Communist-sponsored Tenth Youth Festival, a nine-day gathering for thirty-thousand young delegates from Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. (PAUSE 5 SECS) More than one-hundred-thousand East Germans are also taking part, and East Berlin officials claim the city's population has risen temporarily by half-a-million people.

    The Festival's main slogan is "Anti-Imperialist Solidarity, Peace and Friendship."
    A group from South Vietnam, followed in the parade by the North Vietnamese contingent. The East Germans claim anti-Soviet Chinese influence in some South-East Asian states has educed participation in the Festival. The Chinese are not attending.
