About 20,000 Italian demonstrators marched through the centre of Rome on Thursday night (October 4) against Chile's military junta which seized power in last month's coup.

The chanting demonstrators carried pictures of Chile's former socialist President D. Salvador Allende, who died in the coup, and Luis Corvalan, Secretary General of Chile's outlawed Communist party. Before dispersing speakers addressed the demonstrators in Rome's Piazza Navona.

A Chilean military tribunal is investigating Senor Corvalan on charges of treason and subversion. He also faces charges of illegal possession of arms and ???buzziement from state enterprises. If he is tried and convicted, Senor Corvalan could be executed by firing squad by' Chile's foreign Minister, Rear Admiral Ismael Huorts, has commented that rumours of Senor Corvalan's impending execution were part of a campaign outside Chile to damage the country's image.

Mr. Jacob Malik, the Soviet Union's United Nations delegate, made the accusation in a speech to the General Assembly on Wednesday (October 2).

Chile's military junta is planning a world wide campaign to explain why it seized power.

Rear Admiral Ismael Huorts, has said rumours that Senor Cervalan is about to be executed are part of an outside campaign against Chile.
