Background: Peter Gethin of Britain had a surprise victory in the Race of Champions at Brand's Hatch on Sunday (March 18) afternoon.

Gethin, a 33-year-old Londoner, drove a Chevron Chevrolet to victory in the European qualifier on Saturday. He then beat all the odds when he defeated a world class Formula I field in his Formula 5000 Chevron over 40 laps of the British Grand-Prix Circuit.

His Chevron was the first non-grand-prix car to win in the 84-year history of the event.

The race had an eventful start. At the first bend three cars came off the track. Among them was Britain's Graham Hill who had to drop out.

Mike Hailwood took the lead for a short time in the closing stages. But his car went into a spin, crashed and caught fire. Hailwood was unhurt but the car was badly damaged.

The current world champion, Emerson Fittipaldi also had to drop out of the race. And as the favourites made pit stops or pulled out, Peter Gethin moved through the field to victory. He averaged 110.84 mph (177.18 kph) for the 106 mill (170.5 kilometres) race.
