Background: A new soccer stadium is under construction in Mexico City, financed in a unique manner. The Estadio Azteca, or Aztec Stadium contains 709 elaborate private boxes, nearly all of which have been leased for 99 years to wealthy "futbol" fans. The leases cost from eight to sixteen thousand dollars. Each box contains ten theater-type seats, a carpeted entrance hall, a bath, and a bar. Each box has a special parking space for two cars, located about thirty yards from the box entrance. In addition to the boxes, there are 1,788 individual seats that lease for sums ranging from 430 to 760 dollars.A number of companies are buying up big blocks of these to ensure seats for their clients or employees. All told, the advance leasing of boxes and seats has brought the builders about six million dollars. The owners of the three soccer teams in Mexico City are advancing four million dollars towards the stadium's total cost of ten million. The stadium owners and the team owners will split the profits..which are expected to be considerable.
The Aztec Stadium is due to open (29 November, 1964).
