    The contest was officially opened on Sunday (14 July) at a colourful ceremony in the 10,000-seat Folk Arts Theatre built on reclaimed land on Manila Bay.

    Contestants paraded in national costumes and exchanged giftes with a representative of the Philippines Government, Tourism Secretary Jose Aspiras. Miss Universe 1973, the Philippine's own Margarita Moran, was also presented to the packed first night audience.

    Miss Universe 1974 will be named next Sunday (21 July) after an arduous week of interviews and rehearsals before an 11-man judging panel.

    She will receive ten thousand American dollars, a service contract for a similar amount and many other valuable gifts and prizes.

    Early favourites for the contest were the host of beautiful Asian girls, Miss Australia, Miss Finland and Miss Venezuela.

    SYNOPSIS: Sixty-six of the world's most beautiful girls are competing in Manila, the Philippines, for the coveted title of Miss Universe, nineteen seventy-four.
