  • Description

A rally to celebrate the cause of youth in 'anti-imperialist' countries around the world was staged in Algiers, the capital of Algeria on Tuesday (24 April). Among the guests were Rhodesian Patriotic Front leader Joshua Nkomo and the founder of the Patriotic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, George Habash.

SYNOPSIS: The Secretary General of the Algerian National Youth Union, Monsieur Djellouni, was one of the key speakers, with Mr. Habash listening intently near him on the dias. Since a notable a conference held in 1955, the date of the twenty-fourth of April has been set aside to acknowledge youth in countries which consider they have suffered from colonialism and imperialism.

Among the guests was Mr. Joshua Nkomo, who controls his nationalist guerrilla forces from inside Zambia. Mr. Nkomo was in Algeria in part to acquaint himself with the new president, Colonel Chadli Benjedid, who succeeded the late Houari Boumedienne. Mr. Nkomo says Algeria, gives 'appreciable aid' to his black nationalist movement.

Mr. Habash speaking. A few days earlier he had called in Algiers for an urgent summit of hardline Arab states to oppose Egypt's peace treaty with Israel.

This rally was only one of numerous activities in Algeria on this day to celebrate the world day for youth. Speakers at this rally said that the geo-political map had changed greatly in the past quarter century, with more countries now independent. But many countries were still dominated, colonial powers were still being exercised and wars waged.

Mr. Nkomo spoke on the theme of the role that youth had to play in those countries which were determined to struggle to overcome those forces they classified as imperialist, colonialist and racist.
