  • Description

South Africa's problem of coping with Angolan refugees continues to grow.

On Wednesday (20 August) there were an estimated two thousand homeless Angolans in two camps at Cullinan, near Pretoria, and another eleven thousand waited at Gootfontein and Oshakati, in South West Africa, to be transferred.

Facilities and services have been stretched to the limit, and the South African Government says work is going on round the clock to expand facilities at the two South African camps. Plans are also underway to establish another camp at Johannesburg.

Refugees were transferred to the camps near Pretoria by the South African Government, after they flocked across the border into South-West Africa (administrated by South Africa).

Among the homeless thousands are white Portuguese, Africans and coloureds, most with very little money and possessions. South Africa is prepared to accept as immigrants those with technical and professional skills, a London newspaper reported, but quoted Dr. Connie Mulder, Minister of the Interior, as saying: "These people are regarded by the Government as being in transit to Portugal".

The South African Government has, however, agreed to help these people in the interim by laying on extensive facilities. Refugees themselves contribute in the running of the camps and the preparation of their won food.

When Mr. Johannes Van der Spuy, Minister of Social Welfare, visited the two camps at Cullinan on Wednesday, he was greeted by welcoming signs and cheering, grateful refugees. A spokesman for the refugees told him: "My people are very grateful for what your government is doing for us. We shall never be able to stop thanking you".

Two hundred refugees have already been flown to Portugal, and the South African authorities are planning regular repatriation flights.
