    In the Khmer Republic, Government forces have claimed to have killed over two hundred Communist forces on a day-long battle on Highway One about thirty miles (45 kilometres) south of Phnom Penh.

    Captured weapons and the bodies of Communist forces, killed when about five hundred of them stormed government positions, were later inspected by the Commander of the Khmer Army's Second Division, General Dien Del.

    Khmer President Lom Nol said yesterday (29 August) in his first press conference since the ending of American bombing aid that his government had decided to rely on a military victory to and the war. He added that he believed that attacks form insurgent forces could be held off indefinitely.

    As well as military activities in the field, the government also staged a drive past of about a hundred armoured personnel carriers in Phnom Penh on August 26 in a display aimed at reassuring the city's population of the government's capabilities of defending the capital without American air support.

    On the same day, a cousin of the exiled Prince Norodom Sihanouk, launched a propaganda move aimed at gaining the government international and internal support.

    Prince Si???owath Sirik Matak, a general and a member of the Khmer high political council, read out at a news conference on open letter to Prince Sihanouk in which he called upon him to stop landing his name to the machinations of his country's foreign enemies.

    He called upon him to refuse to live under the thumbs of foreigners who only wanted to exploit his desire for revenges Prince Sihanouk leads a government in exile from Peking.

It's text in English is, "Dear Cousin, if you have ever been moved to make a calm self-appraisal, you will have found that you in particular are the origin of this war which is causing your country so much bereavement and destruction,"
