  • Description

Two battalions of South Vietnamese infantrymen recaptured a village from North Vietnamese troops over the weekend after some of the heaviest fighting in South Vietnam for several months.

A three-hour assault on Communist forces holding Phouc Hoi Village, 7 miles (12 kms) northeast of Tay Ninh city and some 55 miles (88 Kms) northwest of Saigon, ended on Saturday (14 December).

Casualties on both sides during eight days of fighting were over 600, although on Saturday government losses were put at two dead and seven wounded, with five bodies of Communist soldiers found in the village.

Government air strikes and artillery barrages from both sides destroyed 600 homes in the village.

Over 8,000 inhabitants of Phouc Hoi had evacuated to Tay Ninh in the past week.
