  • Description

AFTER BEING HELD CAPTIVE BY BOLIVIAN TIN MINERS FOR 10 DAYS, 19 HOSTAGES, AMONG THEM FOUR AMERICANS, WERE RELEASED LAST MONDAY. THE MINERS HAD TAKEN THE HOSTAGES AFTER THE GOVERNMENT HAD ARRESTED AND GAOLED TWO MINERS' UNION LEADERS ON CHARGES RANGING FROM EMBEZZLEMENT TO BLACKMAIL. THE MINERS DEMANDED THE RELEASE OF THEIR LEADERS BEFORE THEY WOULD FREE THE HOSTAGES.

PROTRACTED NEGOTIATIONS FOLLOWED. THE GOVERNMENT REJECTED ALL DEALS THAT WOULD INVOLVE RELEASING THE UNION LEADERS, AND THE TIN MINERS WOULD NOT RELEASE THEIR HOSTAGES INSPITE OF APPEALS FROM THEIR IMPRISONED LEADERS.

LAST SATURDAY AGREEMENT WAS FINALLY REACHED. UNDER THE TERMS OF THE AGREEMENT THE GOVERNMENT AGREED THAT THE UNION LEADERS WOULD BE TRIED IN UNCIA, THE COURT DISTRICT THAT INCLUDES THE TIN MINING AREA, INSTEAD OF IN LA PAZ; AND THE GOVERNMENT TROOPS WOULD BE WITHDRAWN FROM CATAVI WHERE THE HOSTAGES WERE HELD.

WHEN THE HOSTAGES WERE FREED THEY WERE REPORTED TO HAVE EXPECTED A HOSTILE RECEPTION. INSTEAD THEY MET CHEERING CROWDS BOTH IN CATAVI, AND AT ORURO, THE NEAREST LARGE CITY, WHERE THEY CAUGHT A PLANE TO LA PAZ.

THREE OF THE AMERICANS HAVE NOW RETURNED TO THE UNITED STATES. THE FOURTH PLANS TO SPEND THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY IN BOLIVIA.
