    THE FIRST AIRCRAFT EVER TO BRING WEST GERMAN TROOPS INTO THE UNITED STATES LANDED JAN 18 AT MCGUIRE AIR FORCE BASE, NEW JERSEY, WITH 108 SOLDIERS ON BOARD.THE MEN - MEMBERS OF THE 23RD AIR DEFENCE BATTALION OF THE WEST GERMAN AIR FORCE - WILL TAKE PART IN "NIKE" MISSILE FIRING PRACTICE AT FORT BLISS, EL PASO, TEXAS.

    AT MCGUIRE BASE TO MEET THEM WAS COLONEL ROBERT J.SUNDS, COMMANDER OF 1611TH AIR BASE GROUP (MATS), MCGUIRE, NEW JERSEY.THE GERMANS WERE TAKEN INTO THE CUSTOMS ROOM WHERE A U.S.CUSTOMS INSPECTOR WENT THROUGH THEIR SUITCASES.THEY WERE THEN ESCORTED TO TRANSIT BARRACKS BEFORE SETTING OFF NEXT DAY FOR TEXAS.

    IN ALL, 156 ENLISTED MEN AND 21 OFFICERS WILL TAKE PART IN THE TRAINING, SCHEDULED TO LAST 8-14 DAYS.THE 23RD BATTALION IS PLACED AT THE DEFENCE OF EUROPE, ALTHOUGH NOT UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANISATION (NATO).

    WHILE THE GERMANS TAKE PART IN THE "NIKE" TRAINING, THEIR "DC-6" PLANES WILL REMAIN IN THE U.S.IN READINESS FOR THE RETURN JOURNEY TO COLOGNE.
