The top young tennis player of the seventies, Sweden's Bjorn Borg, met the former tennis star of the sixties, Australia's Rod Laver, in a twenty thousand dollar (GPB12, 658 sterling) challenger match in New Jersey, U.S.A., on Friday (29 October).

SYNOPSIS: The match was held in the Centrum Stadium, Cherry Hill, New Jersey, to raise money for charity. Borg - playing at the far end - has had a remarkably successful year of tennis. He is the 1976 Wimbledon Champion, and has also won his first World Championship Tennis tournament at Dallas in Texas.

His opponent, Rod Laver, won most of the world's major tennis titles before the categories of amateur and professional were abolished. Tennis experts throughout the world acknowledge that in his prime he was probably the greatest player of all time.

By the final set, Borg's youth was allowing him to dominate the match, despite the more experienced stroke-play of the Australian. In the first set Laver had led up to 4 all, but then he made a series of errors which allowed Borg to slip through and take the set.

The sympathy of the crowd were evenly divided between the current youthful hero, and the Australian veteran, who is only the second man ever to achieve the "grand slam" - winning the four major championships of the world, Australia, France, Wimbledon, and Forest Hills. However, by the ninth game of the second set it was Brog who wa playing for match point.

Borg had reached match point with a run o four straight games after taking the lead at 2-3. Laver's final misjudged lob gave the young Swede the match by 6-4, 6-3.
