  • Description

The French Minister of African Affairs, M. Pierre Billecocq, flew to Dahomey on Thursday (7 September) for talks with Dahomey's Head of State, President Justin Ahomadegbe-Tometin and other leading Ministers.

Dahomey, formerly a French colony, still has strong links with France as a member of the Franc monetary zone. Mr. Billecocq's visit, however, came at a time when some African states have been asking for revisions of their agreements with France.

On his arrival at Cotonou airport, reporters asked M. Billecocq whether these demands would lead to a general revision of agreements between France and African States.

    M. Billecocq thought a systematic revision of agreements, although the question was 'the order of the day' in some countries, was unnecessary. He saw co-operation between France and Africa as a process of adapting to changing circumstances.

SYNOPSIS: M. Billecocq had a busy schedule during his visit, aimed at improving co-operation between the two countries. With him, he brought good wishes from President Pompidou to Dahomey's Head of State, President Ahomadegbe Tometin.

Highlight of the visit was a banquet at the presidential Palace where M. Billecocq was introduced to many of Dahomey's leading personalities. 'I have come to find out what's happening,' he told the press earlier.

'I want to understand the country and to understand my African friends,' said M. Billecocq, who has been Secretary of African Affairs for only two months.

And he had an important message for M. Theophine Paoletti, Dahomey's Minister of Information and Tourism. President Pompidou of France will be paying an official visit to dahomey late in November. M. Billecocq said President Pompidou will be very happy to come to the home of his Dahomian friends.
