Background: Cambodia's Head of State, and Chairman of the United National Cambodian Front, Prince Norodom Sihanouk, arrived in Syria on Tuesday (18 November) for a four-day visit.
His visit is believed to be aimed at establishing friendly relations between Syria and Cambodia and is part of an eleven-nation tour. He'll also visit Sudan, North Yemen, Somalia, tana Tanzania, Uganda, Yugoslavia, Romania, Albania and Pakistan.
He was met at Damascus Airport by the Syrian president, Hafez Al-Assad and extensive talks were planned between the two leaders.
Prince Sihanouk has said he supported the struggle for the liberation of occupied Middle East territories and for the legitimate rights of the Arab Palestinian people.
Before arriving in Syria, he visited Baghdad in Iraq. There, Iraq and Cambodia had issued a joint statement saying there could be no peaceful and just solution to the Middle East crisis unless all occupied territory was recovered and Palestinians regained their rights to their land.
The statement said the two countries expressed concern at increased military activity and held identical views on the need to maintain it as an area of peace.
