Background: The seventh world cardiology congress opened in Buenos Aires last Monday (2 September). The congress was officially opened by Argentina's President, Senora Maria Estele Peron.
The meeting opened in the Argentine capital against a background of continuing strife within the country.
President Peron took office two months ago on the death of her husband, General Peron and since that time political assassinations have averaged one a week. Recently both the police and army stepped up their anti-guerrilla campaign.
The President was accompanied at the opening ceremony by Welfare Minister, Senor Jose Lopez Rega who is also Senora Peron's private secretary. Late last month friction between Senor Rega and the country's Economy Minister were thought to have been the cause of the resignation, en bloc, of the Argentine cabinet.
Since then President Peron has moved towards the appointment of a Prime Minister to help share the work-load of the government.
A bill to form the post is now being prepared by the Government. Approval of the bill is considered a foregone conclusion because Peronist supporters have a clear majority in both houses of Congress. Favourite for the post is Senor Raul Lastiri, the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
