  • Description

Officials are still examining the wreckage at Aarsele, Belgium, of the British European Airways Vanguard airlines which crashed there on Saturday (2 October), killing all 63 people aboard.

The Airline says the crash is still a complete and utter mystery, and there was no confirmation of a London press report suggesting an explosion had wrecked the Vanguard's tailplane. The tailplane came down five miles (8 kilometres) away from the rest of the Vanguard's wreckage.

A B.E.A. spokesman also said the flight recorder or 'black box from the wreck had not given any definite indication why the aircraft crashed.

SYNOPSIS: On Monday the twisted wreckage at Aarsele, Belgium, of the British Vanguard airliner which crashed on Saturday, had still not provided any clue to the cause of the disaster, in which all 63 people aboard died. British European Airways said the crash remained a complete and utter mystery, and there was no confirmation of a London press report which said experts were almost certain it was an explosion that wrecked the Vanguard's tailplane.

The tailplane came down five miles (8 kilometres) away from the rest of the Vanguard wreckage.

A B.E.A. spokesman also said that the flight recorder recovered from the wreck had not so far given any definite indications why the aircraft crashed.

The recorder was brought to London for examination and later sent back to Belgium for the official enquiry.
