  • Description

Yugoslavia's 20th international cross-country ski-run competition went ahead as scheduled this weekend at Pokljuka in the Julian Alps-at an altitude of 1300 metres (4,265 feet) Part of the tracks were artificially covered with snow.

It was originally planned to hold the competition beside Lak Bohinj near Kranjska Gora, but the unseasonal shortage of snow forced the organisers to "elevate" the venue to the much higher plateau, where there was just about enough snow. Even then at least one quarter of the ski-run tracks had to be covered with snow artificially.

Despite the efforts to keep the competition going there was a drop in competitors. Some have cancelled their participation, others failed to turn up. One event which was victim of the poor attendance was the women's relay on Sunday when only Yugoslav and Czechoslovak teams took part.

The man's relay was, however, relatively well participated. Eighteen teams from seven nations took part. The top prize went to a team from the Soviet Union and the second to Bulgaria.
