  • Description

Showing obvious signs of her recent collision with a Norwegian tanker, the Australian troopship "New Australia" arrives in Singapore with more than 800 men of the Australian Third Battalion with their families.

The "New Australia" was severely damaged on her voyage to Singapore when she collided with the Norwegian tanker "France Stove" in the Torres Straits near Thursday Island.

The impact of the collision tore jagged holes in the plating of the Australian troopship and the bow of the ship was dented for more than 100 feet.

Altogether there were more than 1000 passengers on the ship when the collision occurred including over 200 women and children.

The Commander of the Third Battalion, Lt.Colonel J.F.White, explained to reporters some of the Battalion's plans and told them that the disembarkation of the troops would begin at once.

After the ship had been given a thorough examination to estimate the total damage, the married families sailed on in the troopship for disembarkation at Penang in Malaya.

While the married families travel on by sea, the single men of the Battalion have been taken to a jungle training centre at Kota Tinggi in Johore State about 60 miles from Singapore.

There they will be hardened up the tropical conditions before proceeding to take an active role in the fight against communist terrorists in Malaya.
