    ON FEB 14, MR MATES WILL LUNCH WITH SIR FITZROY MACLEAN, WHO LED THE BRITISH WARTIME LIAISON MISSION TO THE YUGOSLAV PARTISANS.MR MATES, WHO FOUGHT WITH THE PARTISANS, WAS HIMSELF FOR A TIME ATTACHED AS LIAISON OFFICER AND INTERPRETER TO THE BRITISH OFFICERS IN CROATIA.

    AFTER THIS APPOINTMENT, MR MATES WILL ATTEND QUESTION TIME IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS.LATER THAT DAY HE WILL HAVE TALKS AT THE FOREIGN OFFICE WITH SIR HAROLD CACCIA, THE PERMANENT UNDER-SECRETARY.ON FEB 15 HE WILL BE GUEST OF HONOUR AT A LUNCHEON AT THE YUGOSLAV EMBASSY.

    BORN IN 1911 IN CROATIA, MR MATES BECAME CHIEF EDITOR OF 'TANJUG', THE YUGOSLAV PRESS AGENCY IN 1945.HE BECAME ASSISTANT MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS IN 1948 AND ATTENDED MANY SESSIONS OF THE UNITED NATIONS, BECOMING PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE FOR YUGOSLAVIA IN 1952.MR MATES WAS APPOINTED YUGOSLAV AMBASSADOR IN WASHINGTON IN 1954, IN 1958 HE WAS GENERAL SECRETARY TO PRESIDENT TITO IN THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC'S OFFICE UNTIL HE RETURNED IN 1961 TO THE YUGOSLAV FOREIGN MINISTRY.
