  • Description

BRITISH AND NORWEGIAN CLIMBING TEAMS HAVE BEGUN THE ASCENT OF ONE OF EUROPE'S MOST INHOSPITABLE MOUNTAIN FACES, THE TROLL WALL, WHICH LEADS TO THE SUMMIT OF TROLLVEGGEN, A PEAK IN WESTERN NORWAY. BAD WEATHER HAD EARLIER DELAYED THE START OF THE CLIMB, BUT BY LAST SATURDAY BOTH TEAMS WERE WELL UNDER WAY.

EXPERTS SAY THE DIFFICULT CLIMB COULD TAKE TWO WEEKS. BOTH TEAMS HAVE ALREADY SPENT LONGER THAN THIS WAITING FOR THE WEATHER TO CLEAR. BY LAST WEEK-END CONDITIONS WERE BETTER AND THE RACE FOR THE SUMMIT BEGAN.

TWO OF THE BRITISH CLIMBERS SPENT THEIR FIRST NIGHT OUT ON FRIDAY SUSPENDED BY ROPES FROM SPECIALLY-MADE RUCKSACKS. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME THIS EQUIPMENT HAD BEEN SUED BY CLIMBERS. BEFORE THEM ROSE THE SHEER 3,300 FEET (1,000 METRES) TALL TROLL WALL.

THE NORWEGIANS STARTED THEIR CLIMB FROM THE OPPOSITE CORNER OF THE WALL. DUE TO WATER ON THE SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN, THEY HAD TO CHANGE THEIR PLANNED ROUTE. BY FRIDAY THEY HAD PASSED THE 250-FEET MARK.

FOR TWO OF THE TEAM THERE WAS A MOMENT OF TENSION ON SUNDAY MORNING AS THEY CROSSED A SMALL GLACIER BELOW THE MAIN WALL. HELD BY ROPES, ONE OF THE NORWEGIANS WAS INCHING HIS WAY ACROSS THE ICE WHEN HE SLIPPED. ANCHORED BY HIS PARTNER, HE SWUNG DOWN ACROSS THE ICE. GRADUALLY HE RETAINED HIS FOOTING AND BEGAN THE TOUGH ASCENT...

SYNOPSIS: THE TROLLVEGGEN MOUNTAINS IN WESTERN NORWAY -- ONE OF EUROPE'S MOST DIFFICULT CLIMBS NOW IT IS BEING CHALLENGED BY TWO TEAMS OF MOUNTAINEERS - ONE FROM BRITAIN, THE OTHER FROM NORWAY.

THE BRITISH CLIMBERS BEGAN THE MAIN ASCENT ON FRIDAY. THEY HAD BEEN DELAYED BY BAD WEATHER.

THE NORWEGIAN CLIMBERS HAD TO CHANGE THEIR ROUTE AFTER WATER POURING DOWN THE MOUNTAIN MADE THEIR PLANNED CLIMB IMPOSSIBLE... CROWDS WHICH GATHERED ON THE ROADS IN THE VALLEY CAUSED TRAFFIC JAMS AS THEY WATCHED THE TEAMS INCH THEIR WAY UP THE SLOPE...

A MOMENT OF DRAMA FOR TWO OF THE NORWEGIANS... THE SMALL GLACIER HAD TO BE CROSSED ON SUNDAY. STEP BY STEP THEY ADVANCE, ONLY ANCHORED BY TWO THIN ROPES...

THE CLIMB, WHICH IS NOT OFFICIALLY A RACE, NEVERTHELESS CARRIES CONSIDERABLE PRESTIGE FOR THE TEAM THAT REACHES THE SUMMIT FIRST. EXPERTS SAY THE ASCENT COULD TAKE UP TO TWO WEEKS...
