Background: African leaders at the conference in Ethiopia of the Organisation of African Unity have been doing their best to mediate in the frontier dispute between Somalia and Ethiopia. The row was threatening to over-shadow the OAU summit conference, which this year marks the tenth anniversary of the founding of the OAU.
The dispute concerns the southern desert region of Ethiopia, where oil is said to have been discovered. It has led to charges from Somalia that Ethiopia is massing troops in the area for an invasion.
Ethiopia has denied the allegation, at the same time asserting that she will bot give up any territory to her neighbour, Somalia.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Aklilu Habte-Wold told the conference there was no question of taking up arms against Somalia, and suggested such an allegation was mischievous. He made his speech in French.
