    REPRESENTATIVES OF THIRTY NATIONS ATTENDED THE OPENING SESSION IN ROME TODAY (TUESDAY) OF AN INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION ON OIL POLLUTION.

    THE CONVENTIONAL HAS ALREADY HEARD SUGGESTIONS THAT THERE SHOULD BE A WORLDWIDE MONITORING SYSTEM TO GATHER INFORMATION ON INSTANCES OF POLLUTION, MAINLY THE RESULT OF DISCHARGE BY SHIPS AT SEA.

    IN ALL, 250 PEOPLE ARE ATTENDING THE DISCUSSIONS, INCLUDING MANY OCEANOGRAPHIC EXPERTS AND ADVISERS. THE CONVENTION IS BEING HELD NUMBER THE AUSPICES OF THE INTERGOVERNMENTAL MARITIME CONSULTATIVE ORGANISATION, AND IS SPONSORED BY BRITISH, ITALIAN AND NORWEGIAN COMMITTEES CONCERNED WITH MARITIME POLLUTION.

    THE MEETING IS BEING CHAIRED BY LORD JELLICOE, HEAD OF THE BRITISH COMMITTEE ON MARITIME OIL POLLUTION.
