Background: Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi arrived in Khartoum last week (1 February) for talks with Sudanese President Jaafar El-Nimeiry. Colonel Gaddafi had arrived from Egypt, where he had been holding discussions with President Anwar Sadat over the Egyptian leader's visit to Moscow.
Colonel Gaddafi and President El-Nimeiry drove from Khartoum airport to the Presidential Palace through streets lined with cheering Sudanese. Two members of the Libyan Revolution Command Council accompanied Colonel Gaddafi on his visit, and were reported to have taken part in later discussions involving what was termed the Arab revolution.
