The United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, William Schaufele, arrived in Kenya on Friday (10 September) after visiting Zambia and Tanzania. During his tour Mr. Schaufele said that an African mission by US Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, was a strong possibility. The White House subsequently announced that Dr. Kissinger would begin a round of "shuttle" diplomacy in Africa on Monday (13 September).

SYNOPSIS: Mr. Schaufele flew into Kenya from Zambia where he met President Kenneth Kaunda. he had held discussions earlier with President Julius Nyerere in Tanzania, on the situation in southern Africa. At a news conference after his arrival, Mr. Schaufele said that both sets of talks had been very constructive and helpful.
