  • Description

Vice President Nixon spent part of today in La Paz exploring the difficulties of the Bolivian tin industry. Tin prices were recently depressed still further when Russia dumped ten thousand tons on the open market and Bolivia wants further economic assistance from the United States.

The Vice President's flying goodwill tour of South America took him yesterday to the mountain airport outside La Paz, and to one of the most colourful welcomes he has received so far.

The signs welcome Mr Nixon and his wife to the highest commercial airport in the world. The Air Force plane carrying the vice presidential party put down 13,350 high. As always when embassy officials came to the airport with oxygen masks, Mr and Mrs Nixon got along without them but a Navy steward in charge of the baggage fainted inside the plane for lack of one.

The Bolivian Vice President, Dr. Francisco Alvarez Plata rode with Mr Nixon in an open car on the five-mile parade route into La Paz. The trip, which normally takes twenty minutes at most took over an hour because of the enthusiasm of the crowds. The Latin American welcome included a heavy sprinkling of confetti.
