  • Description

A MEMBER OF THE BRITISH RAILWAYS BOARD, MR JOHN BATTER, OFFICIALLY HANDED OVER A LOCOMOTIVE TO THE ACTING HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR CANADA, MR GEOFFREY MURRAY, TODAY (MONDAY) ABOARD THE FREIGHTER "BEAVEROAK" AT ITS BERTH IN THE LONDON DOCKS. THE LOCOMOTIVE, A CLASS A.4 ENGINE CALLED "DOMINION OF CANADA" AND FORMERLY IN SERVICE WITH BRITISH RAILWAYS, IS DESTINED FOR THE CANADIAN RAILROAD HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION'S MUSEUM IN MONTREAL TO BE DISPLAYED AS PART OF CANADA'S CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS.

THE CANADIAN RAILROAD HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION FIRST MADE ITS APPROACH TO BRITAIN TO SECURE THE "DOMINION OF CANADA" -- BY THEN WITHDRAWN FROM SERVICE IN BRITAIN AND DUE TO BE SCRAPPED -- NEARLY TWO YEARS AGO. BRITISH RAIL AGREED TO GIVE THE LOCOMOTIVE TO THE ASSOCIATION, AND A NUMBER OF BRITISH COMPANIES WITH CANADIAN INTERESTS CONTRIBUTED TOWARDS THE COST OF FREIGHTING IT, OR GAVE OTHER ASSISTANCE.

ALREADY IN WORKSHOPS OUT OF RUNNING ORDER AND SHORT OF SOME PARTS, THE LOCOMOTIVE HAD TO BE RESTORED AND REPAINTED. THIS COST GBP1,600 STERLING, AND WAS PAID FOR BY THE COMPANY TATE & LYLE, WHICH HAS INTERESTS IN CANADIAN SUGAR. THE WORK WAS CARRIED OUT UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF THE CURATOR OF HISTORICAL RELICS TO THE BRITISH RAILWAYS BOARD. ALTOGETHER 23 BRITISH COMPANIES AND ORGANISATIONS -- INCLUDING THE PORT OF LONDON AUTHORITY -- GAVE FINANCIAL OR PRACTICAL ASSISTANCE IN GETTING THE LOCOMOTIVE ABOARD THE "BEAVEROAK".

THE "DOMINION OF CANADA" WAS BUILT IN YORKSHIRE IN 1937, AND WAS AMONG THE FIRST ENGINES IN BRITAIN TO BE COMPLETELY STREAMLINED. IT HAD THREE NAMES. IT WAS FIRST NAMED "BUZZARD", IN APRIL 1937. ALMOST IMMEDIATELY IT WAS RENAMED "WOODCOCK", FOR UNKNOWN REASONS. FINALLY, IN JUNE, ITS NAME WAS CHANGED FOR THE LAST TIME TO THE "DOMINION OF CANADA". THE NAMING CEREMONY WAS CARRIED OUT ON THE 15TH OF JUNE BY THE HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR CANADA, THE HON. VINCENT HASSEY, P.C., WHO LATER BECAME THE CANADIAN GOVERNOR GENERAL.
