  • Description

A British air force Vulcan jet bomber crashed killing three crewmen and a woman as it was about to land at Malta's Luqa airport on Tuesday (14 October).

Eye witnesses said the giant four engined bomber, unarmed and on a training flight from Britain, exploded in a ball of flame over the village of Zabbar. Wreckage dropped to the ground only a hundred yards (metres) from a school where 200 children were preparing for afternoon lessons. One child was injured, and part of the plane's fuselage fell into a busy street, the flames scorching houses and killing the woman.

In London an air force spokesman said two crew members had ejected safely and were in hospital with minor injuries. Five others were still officially listed as missing. The Vulcan was once part of Britain's nuclear deterrent.

But the spokesman said the plane was not carrying bombs of any type. A board of enquiry will be held to investigate the cause of the crash.
