Background: A SHIP BRINGING 8,500 TONS OF RICE FROM BURMA TO CALCUTTA RAN AGROUND IN THE HOOGHLY RIVER NEAR BATANAGAR AND WAS SINKING FAST WHEN THIS FILM WAS SHOT ON WEDNESDAY.

BOUND FOR CALCUTTA WITH ITS VALUABLE CARGO OF RICE, THE MOTOR VESSEL "RATNA SHOBHANA" RAN AGROUND AT THE WEEKEND CAUSING SEVERE DAMAGE TO THE CENTRE OF THE HULL. THE RICE, PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT IN VIEW OF INDIA'S CURRENT FOOD SHORTAGE, SEEMED DOOMED TO ROT IN THE MUDDY RIVER BED. ALL HOPE SALVAGING THE MAIN PART OF THE CARGO WAS ABANDONED WHEN THE FORWARD HOLDS BECAME COMPLETELY SUBMERGED, ALTHOUGH THERE WAS STILL SOME RICE WHICH COULD BE RECOVERED FROM THE AFT HOLDS.

THE MASTER AND CREW ABANDONED THE SHIP WHEN IT BECAME EVIDENT THAT THERE WAS NO HOPE OF SAVING HER.

AS THE TIDE SWELLED, BATHERS ON THE GHATS OF BATANAGAR COULD SEE THE WATER RISING FOOT BY FOOT UNTIL THE FORCE PART OF THE VESSEL, SAGGING DANGEROUSLY, WAS LEVEL WITH THE BROWN SWELL OF THE RIVER.

THE SHIP WAS OFFICIALLY CONSIDERED ABANDONED, AND BECAME A WARD OF THE UNION GOVERNMENT'S MARINE DEPARTMENT.
