  • Description

AS RESCUERS CLEAR THE WRECKAGE OF LAST SUNDAY'S TRAIN CRASH NORTH WEST OF BUENOS AIRES, OFFICIALS NO FEAR THE DEATH TOLL MAY BE AS HIGH AS 250.

THE CRASH, ONE OF THE WORST IN THE HISTORY OF RAIL TRAVEL, HAPPENED WHEN A CRACK EXPRESS SMASHED INTO THE REAR OF A STATIONARY TRAIN WITH MORE THAN 1,000 PASSENGERS ABOARD, WHICH HAD BROKEN DOWN AT PACHECO, 22 MILES (36 KMS) NORTHWEST OF BUENOS AIRES.

MOST OF THE VICTIMS WERE TRIPPERS RETURNING TO THE CAPITAL AFTER A WEEKEND IN THE COUNTRY, AND WERE PASSENGERS IN THE STATIONARY TRAIN. THE CRASH OCCURRED IN MID-EVENING ON SUNDAY AS THE EXPRESS, NEARLY AN HOUR LATE, SPED TOWARDS BUENOS AIRES FROM THE CITY OF TUCUMAN.

THE EXPRESS WAS REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN TRAVELLING AT ABOUT 60M.P.H. (96 K.P.H.) AT THE TIME OF IMPACT. THE CRASH LEFT ONE COACH FOLDED AROUND A HEAVY LOCOMOTIVE, A SECOND FITTING LIKE A GLOVE INSIDE THE COACH AHEAD AND TWO MORE THROWN ASIDE FORM THE TRACK. BODIES AND WRECKAGE WERE STREWN AMONG THE FIELDS NEARBY.

FIRST TO RAISE THE ALERT AFTER THE CRASH WAS THE PILOT OF A SMALL LIGHT AIRCRAFT FLYING OVER THE AREA AT THE TIME. TRAINS FERRIED INJURED TO BUENOS AIRES, BUT MANY DIED ON THE WAY. ARMY TRACTORS CLEARED A ROUTE FOR AMBULANCES THROUGH MUD AND WEEDS BY THE TRACKSIDE, BUT MANY RESCUE VEHICLES OVERTURNED, INCLUDING A FIRE ENGINE.

ESTIMATES PUT THE TOTAL INJURED AT OVER 500. AT ONE STAGE DISTRAUGHT RELATIVES TRIED TO BREAK INTO THE POLICE STATION MORGUE, WHERE 98 BODIES HAD BEEN TAKEN. POLICE ALSO REPORTED SOME LOOTING AT THE SCENE OF THE DISASTER, AND THE WHOLE AREA HAS NOW BEEN PLACED UNDER MARTIAL LAW.

TODAY (TUESDAY) POLICE ARRESTED THE STATION MASTER AND SIGNAL BOX OPERATOR OF THE WAYSIDE STATION AT THE SCENE OF THE CRASH, AND ARE SEEKING A THIRD MEMBER OF THE STATION STAFF WHO FLED SHORTLY AFTER THE ACCIDENT.

NO OFFICIAL FIGURES HAVE YET BEEN RELEASED, BUT ARGENTINA'S STATE SECRETARY FOR PUBLIC HEALTH, MR EZEQUIEL HOLMBERG, ESTIMATED DEATH TOLL OF 250. THE WORST RAIL DISASTER IN HIS STORY KILLED 543 PEOPLE AT MODANE, FRANCE, IN DECEMBER 1917; THERE IS NO OTHER ACCIDENT ON RECORD WITH A TOLL OF MORE THAN 250.
