  • Description

Envoys from Gabon, Zaire and Senegal were received by Ivory Coast President Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Abidjan on Monday (26 January) for talks on Angola.

The envoys all brought with them messages from the leaders of their respective countries -- but the contents were not revealed.

From Zaire came the Permanent Secretary of the country's Popular Movement of the Revolution, Mr. Nguza Karl Ibond. He had already visited Zambian President, Kenneth Kaunda, and was also going to meet Senegalese President, Leopold Senghor, on the Angolan situation.

In Abidjan he renewed his call for the departure of all foreign troops from Angola which he said lay at the root of the civil war. He also said the solution in Angola was to have a national union of parties, as no single side represented all the people.

From gabon came the Minister of National Education, Mr. Martin Bongo, and from Senegal Mr. Jacques Diouf, Secretary-General of Rice Culture Development in West Africa. He brought a personal message on Angola from President Senghor.

In recent weeks most of Africa's leaders have been meeting to try to find a solution to the Angolan problem. But an extraordinary summit meeting of the Organisation of African Unity in Ethiopia recently, failed to find a solution.

Meanwhile, another meeting took place in Zaire on Wednesday (28 January) among the Presidents of Zaire, Rwanda, Burundi and the Central African Republic.
