  • Description

The North Vietnamese and Viet Cong delegations walked out of the Paris peace talks in mid-session on Thursday to protest against United States bombing of both North and South Vietnam.

The delegation, left after reading statements to the U.S. and South Vietnamese delegations in the shortest session on record--it lasted 17 minutes.

Observers linked the walkout--the first in the three years of weekly meetings--with North Vietnamese displeasure at President Nixon's visit to Peking, but the delegates made no reference to it.

United States delegate William Porter arrived at the talks expecting some move by the Communist delegates, who had earlier urged him and the South Vietnamese delegate to return to the conference table for "carious negotiations".
