  • Description

The new Miss World, 18-year-old Puerto Rican, Wilnellia Merced, carried out her first official duty when she held a breakfast news conference in London on Friday (21 November).

Miss Merced, a high-school student, was rated an outsider by bookies but took the title from the two favourites, Marina Langner from West Germany, and Miss United Kingdom, Vicki Harris, who were second and third respectively.

Complete with her Miss World crown and sash, Miss Merced posed for newsmen, first with coffee and then with champagne at her London hotel.

Her first aim is to return to her home village of Cajuas to tell her friends and family all about her win.

She's the 25th girl to win the contest and takes a cash prize of ???3,500 (7000 US dollars) and an arduous year's reign that would earn her as much as ?65,000 (130,000 US dollars) in modelling fees and commercial contracts.

Mecca, the contest organisers, hope that their new Miss World will keep the crown longer than her two immediate predecessors. The 1973 winner, Marjorie Wallace, was stripped of her title in a blaze of publicity surrounding her romances. Last year, Helen Morgan of the United Kingdom, an unmarried mother, resigned after four days over adverse publicity.
