  • Description

COMMUNIST AND SOCIALIST MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT FROM THE INDIAN STATE OF KERALA YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) PICKETED THE RESIDENCE OF THE PRIME MINISTER MRS. GANDHI IN NEW DELHI. THE PICKET WAS ARRANGED AS A MARK OF PROTEST AGAINST THE SHORTAGE OF RICE IN THE STATE.

THE FIFTEEN MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT SQUATTED OUTSIDE MRS. GANDHI'S RESIDENCE FOR TEN HOURS.

IN THE PAST THREE WEEKS KERALA'S QUOTA OF RICE HAS BEEN HALVED BECAUSE OF THE INCREASING SHORTAGE OF GRAIN THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.

TWO HUNDRED POLICE RINGED THE PRIME MINISTER'S RESIDENCE. THE MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT SAID THAT THEIR SIT DOWN DEMONSTRATION WOULD GO ON INDEFINITELY. THERE WERE NO SERIOUS INCIDENTS ALTHOUGH AT ONE STAGE POLICE HAD TO PUSH THE DEMONSTRATORS BACK WHEN THEY ATTEMPTED TO MARCH THROUGH THE GATES OF THE PRIME MINISTER'S RESIDENCE.

LATER, MRS. GANDHI SPOKE WITH THE DEMONSTRATORS FOR FIVE MINUTES.

(LASTNIGHT, MRS. GANDHI'S CONGRESS PARTY LOST CONTROL OF THE NINTH OF INDIA'S 17 STATES WHEN THE MADHYA PRADESH GOVERNMENT RESIGNED AFTER LOSING A VOTE IN THE STATE ASSEMBLY. MADHYA PRADESH IS INDIA'S BIGGEST STATE. THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE WAS EXPECTED TO ASK THE LEADER OF A RIGHT WING OPPOSITION GROUP, RAJMATA (DOWAGER MAHARANI) OF GWALIOR TO FORM A COALITION GOVERNMENT).
