All methods have been used to predict the result of the forthcoming US Presidential election. But one that so far neither Vice-President Nixon or Senator Kennedy have consulted is the poll conducted by a popcorn manufacturer among customers buying his product at super-markets and cinemas throughout the country.
When buying popcorn at the supermarkets, customers are asked to fill a ballot-type form indicating their preference. At the cinema, a different technique is used. Patrons, when buying popcorn before going to see the show, indicate their preference by asking for it to be served in a bag bearing the name of their choice.
So far, according to figures released by the manufacturer October 17, Senator John Kennedy, the Democratic candidate, is the favourite with 54.5 per cent of the sales in the past two weeks.
The "Popcorn Poll" was begun in 1948 as part of a campaign to sell excessive crop. It then forecast Harry Truman against the opinions of all other polls, and has been accurate in every Presidential election since.
