Background: Communists in Trivandrum, capital of Kerala, staged a mass rally led by ousted Chief Minister E.M.S. Namboodripad and other Communist ministers August 1 on the first day of Presidential rule.
Though the previous day of dissolution of the Communist Administration passed quietly in the capital, the rally followed by a march through the streets came the same day as Communist and non-Communists clashed elsewhere in the State causing on death and 17 injured.
The actual dismissal of the State Government by the President's representative, the Governor of Kerala, took place briefly and formally at a farewell tea party - in the British tradition - at Government House.
