SYNOPSIS: South African's Suppression of Communism Act has produced many controversial trials. The latest is that of the Dean of Johannesburg, the Very Reverend ffrench-Beytagh, who was formally remanded on bail in a Johannesburg magistrate's court on Friday.

Judge William Booth, a United States judge who flew to South Africa to attend the hearing at the request of the American and Canadian governments, managed to get a seat in the public gallery. Other would-be spectators were not so lucky.

Dean ffrench-Beytagh, a British subject, was again allowed bail of GBP2,900 sterling. He is accused, under the Suppression of Communism Act, of helping banned African political organizations.

Other international spectators included the Bishop of Washington, Dr. W. Creighton, and the Dean of Washington, the Very Reverend Francis Sayre. The prosecution, meanwhile, promised to lay formal charges against 59-year-old Rev. ffrench-Beytagh on June the thirtieth. He was arrested in January and held for eight days before being released on bail.
