Background: The 3,000-ton Soviet naval transport ship Irgiz, ran aground early this week on the Polapetre rocks off the Turkish island of Marmara. The island lies at the south-eastern end of the Sea of Marmara, where it narrows towards the Dardanelles.
The Irgiz had been travelling in this direction when it ran aground. It was reported to be bound for Egypt with a cargo of ammunition.
This film, shot from land and sea, shows the Irgiz still ashore, with the Soviet rescue ship which arrived two days later, standing nearby.
