  • Description

FRENCH TIGHT-ROPE WALKER HENRI ROCHATAIN CLAIMED A WORLD RECORD AT THE WEEKEND AFTER SPENDING EIGHT DAYS ON A TIGHT-ROPE 300FT (100 METRES) OVER A GORGE IN THE LOIRE VALLEY.

KNOWN PROFESSIONALLY AS "HENRY'S", THE 39-YEAR-OLD STUNT MAN BEGAN HIS LONG ORDEAL ON THE EVENING OF THE SIXTH OF MAY. AFTER 190 HOURS, DURING WHICH TIME HE WAS FED FROM BELOW, HE STEPPED OFF THE ROPE ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON TO THE CHEERS OF A CROWD OF 3,000. ROCHATAIN CLAIMED A WORLD RECORD FOR THIS FEAT, AND, DESPITE INJURING HIS SHOULDER WHEN CLIMBING OFF THE ROPE, HE INTENDED MAKING THE TWO MILE (THREE KILOMETRE) WALK ACROSS THE GORGE AND BACK ON THE FOLLOWING DAY.

HE WAS FORCED TO ABANDON THIS ATTEMPT YESTERDAY AFTER WALKING FOR ONE KILOMETRE, ABOUT THREE FIFTHS OF A MILE, ABOVE THE WATER-FILLED GORGE. THE CROWD WHICH HAD GATHERED TO WATCH ROCHATAIN'S WALK WERE NEVERTHELESS ABLE TO ENJOY A DEMONSTRATION ON THE WIRE IN WHICH THE STUNT MAN AND HIS WIFE JANYCK USED A MOTOR CYCLE.

ROCHATAIN LOOKED TIRED AFTER HIS LONELY EIGHT-DAY VIGIL AND WAS OBVIOUSLY IN PAIN AFTER HIS FURTHER DEMONSTRATION YESTERDAY.
