  • Description

Israeli warplanes bombed Palestinian strongholds in Southern Lebanon on Thursday (24 May) for the second day in succession. The Palestine news agency, WAFA, reported that the Israeli planes carried out a ten-minute raid near the market town of Nabatiyeh. But the new agency said ground batteries fro palestinian-Leftist positions intercepted the planes - preventing them from completing the mission. On Wednesday (23 May), Israeli bombers attacked three Lebanese villages south of Beirut - killing at least five people and injuring more than twenty.

SYNOPSIS: Various sources placed the number of dead in Wednesday's raids at between four and ten. The Israeli aircraft struck within hours of Palestinian bomb attacks in Tel Aviv and in the occupied West Bank. Beirut Radio said jets strafed houses occupied by Lebanese and Palestinian civilians about 20 kilometres (twelve miles) south of the Lebanese capital. The attack lasted ten minutes. Beirut Radio said the Israeli planes were driven off by anti-aircraft fire form Syrian peace-keeping forces in the region.

Many of the injured were treated at the Ghaza Red Crescent Hospital in Beirut. The bombing aids took place on the eve of talks between Egypt and Israel on Palestinian autonomy in the occupied West Bank of the Jordan and the Gaza strip. The fresh out-break in hostilities emphasised the gap between participants in the talks and Palestinians based in Lebanon - who are strongly opposed to the United States sponsored peace talks. The palestine Liberation Organisation claims the strikes were aimed at weakening resistance to the discussions.
